MISSION VALLEY – Water-pollution regulators fined a major energy firm $222,000 yesterday for failing to adequately clean the water it deposits into a tributary of the San Diego River.
The agency cited more than 30 “serious” or “chronic” violations at the company's water-cleaning operation in Mission Valley during roughly the past three years.
As San Diego's water shortage worsens, one possible local source remains undrinkable. There's an aquifer under the Qualcomm Stadium parking lot. But it was contaminated by petroleum spills in the 1980s and 90s. The company responsible for the cleanup has repeatedly missed deadlines and is being sued by the city of San Diego.
(As much as 500,000 gallons of fuel leaked below this Mission Valley Terminal in the 1980s, contaminating the groundwater below.

Last month, Kinder Morgan had temporarily shut a terminal in Pasadena, Texas, because of a fire.

PASADENA, TX (KTRK) -- Fire crews spent all night fighting a petroleum fire that neighbors watched from miles away.
The fire started in a manifold pit at the Kinder Morgan Terminal on North Witter Road about 11pm Tuesday.
Officials say the fire is now under control. They're now doing what they call a 'controlled burn.'
The manifold pit is where multiple lines run, which feed petroleum products to various companies across the nation.
